Morning After Pill

So, you had unprotected sex, and thoughts are racing through your head......

What If?....I'm pregnant or what if he gave me an STD?  What if.....?

What is the Morning After Pill?

-a drug intended to be taken as soon as possible within the first 72 hours after unprotected
HOW DO I KNOW IF AN EGG HAS BEEN FERTILIZED?

You don't know.
sex to prevent pregnancy
-It contains a high dosage of a progesterone (levonorgestrel) which is found in many birth control pills

-at the dosage found in the morning after pill, this drug may work on rare occasions to prevent an embryo from
implanting in the uterus

-referred to by the brand name -Plan B

*In 2009 Plan B was reformulated and renamed Plan B One Step.  It is now taken as a single-dose tablet.  A two-dose generic formula is also available.

Sperm can reach the fallopian tubes mere minutes after intercourse. So, if an egg has already been released, fertilization can occur.

So, when you wake up on the "morning after", an egg may have already been fertilized.

And, if that is the case, using emergency contraception might
cause a very early abortion.

This pill does not protect against STDs or AIDS.

How it Works
1.  It may prevent ovulation-the egg will not be released to meet the sperm-so fertilization, sometimes known as conception, can't occur.

2.  It may affect the lining of your fallopian tubes so that sperm cannot reach the egg.  This also prevents fertilization.

3.  It may irritate the lining of the uterus.  If an egg has already been released and fertilized by the sperm, this irritation could make it harder for the embryo to implant in the uterus.
Are there side effects?

You may experience several short-term side effects when taking the morning-after-pill. These include:

-nausea and
vomiting

-
irregular and unpredictable menstrual periods

-cramping and  abdominal pain-which might be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy (a potentially life threatening condition in which a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus-emergency care is reguired!). The morning-after-pill will not end an
ectopic pregnancy. If you have severe abdominal pain 3-5 weeks after using the morning-after-pill, see your health care provider to rule out ectopic pregnancy.
